Tom Button Could Have a Record Five Starters in 2YO Classic

Premier Rockhampton trainer Tom Button could have as many as a record five starters in the rich $125,000 Capricornia Yearling Sales 2YO Classic (1200m) to be run at Callaghan Park on Saturday, April 13.

These are Flying Crackerjak; Pound For pound; The Stockbroker: Woohoo Girl and Poetic Pete with the latter having to earn valuable prize money to make the field.

Both last start winners from the St Pat’s Day races at Callaghan Park on March 16 in Flying Crackerjak (Wicked Style-Perpugilliam) and Pound For Pound (Sidereus-Massage) are fully qualified and won’t start again before the Classic.

The Stockbroker (Sidereus-Special Deposit) who has been a very consistent pay cheque earner will start on Friday week at Mackay in a $31K QTIS 2YO Maiden (1200m).

The distance should be tailor made for The Stockbroker who has not been ideally suited by the shorter versions of juvenile races this season while still grinding to the line as he lacks a sharp turn of foot.

The Sidereus-Harley Ma filly Woohoo Girl, already a Mackay winner for the Button stable, will round-off her Classic prep by barrier trialling at Callaghan Park on Friday.

Rothesay gelding Poetic Pete, the younger sibling of the winners Poetic Saga; Poetic Show and Poetic Luck will also head to Mackay to race in the QTIS 2YO in a last-ditch attempt to make the cut for the Classic.

Button has a team of 22 horses in work at a Bouldercome training complex where he said the horses had reacted positively to the country way of life with the advantage of doing slow training on a work track on the property.

“Flying Crackerjak won well at Rocky and has come on since and is in very good nick. On reflection the track work that Pound For Pound did leading up to the win on the same day was good. Although beaten in the grass gallop on the Tuesday before the race by The Tax Accountant, the fact that he then just got beaten in the big race in Brisbane last Saturday really made me rethink about Pound For Pound”, Button said.
Speaking of which, The Tax Accountant, another Capricornia Yearling Sale graduate being a son of Love Conquers All will back-up again in Brisbane on Saturday.

“We will have to claim as he was given 59kg so Baylee Nothdurft will claim and take weight off his back”, Button said.
Incidentally, two of the progeny of Love Conquers All will be offered at the forthcoming CYS by Werner Quast and Tullyard.

While Button acknowledges that he will have weight in numbers in the Classic on April 13, he is not overawed by that statistic.
“They still have to be good enough to win and I have never seen the CYS Classic like this one as there are so many winners already in the field. It is going to hard to win”, he said.

Given that, Button is also aware that the last two winners of the Classic in Stylish Criminal and Wicked Ways both came from Oaklands Stud in common with Flying Crackerjak; Pound For Pound; The Stockbroker and Woohoo Girl.

At Toowoomba races today WEDNESDAY another CYS Classic hopeful in Adamdeeant (G Whittington-Sahifa x Lion Hunter) will contest the $37,000 QYIS 2YO Maiden (1050m).

On debut, Adamdeeant was super impressive in just going down to highly rated Better Than Ready gelding Bluey’s Ready at Callaghan Park on March 7.

“Adam raced greenly that day but it was a big run and his jockey Matthew McGillivray spoke highly of the horse and wanted to be on him next time which is the case. I think he is a promising horse”, managing part-owner Steve Little said.
Raced by Steve and his son Jacob, Adamdeeant when offered by Grandview at the 2018 CYS sold for $22,000 and is trained by Matt Kropp at Dalby.

Grandview has a quality draft of seven yearlings – six fillies and a colt at the 2019 CYS by the sires Whittington; Holy Roman Emperor; Dream Ahead; Star Witness; Globetrotter and Top Echelon.

The first of the progeny of Whittington are going “gang busters” and were highly sought after at last week’s MM March Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

At the first class seven race TAB card in Rockhampton tomorrow THURSDAY, CYS Classic contenders Tycoon Ruler; Hezhome and Rocky Poet will clash against winners Bluey’s Ready and Whitty Girl in a $31,000 QTIS 2YO Maiden (1100m).
