The bard William Shakespeare’s word from the play Richard 111 -” A Horse! A horse! My Kingdom for a horse!” will resonate in Rockhampton over the next three days.
Indeed, as over the two TAB race meetings at Callaghan Park race course today and tomorrow some 200 thoroughbreds will race while just over 100 yearlings will be auctioned on Sunday.
The common thread relating to them all will centre around the euphoria of winning a race and there are 15 such events on the Rockhampton Jockey Club’s two-day program offering over $500,000 in prize money.
It should not be understated that the $125,000 ($147,000 on offer for fillies) Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic (1200m) run at Callaghan Park at 4.08pm on Saturday, is the richest race run in Queensland this weekend.
That’s a big call but it certainly gives credence to the prosperity and standard of racing that Rockhampton has to offer.
It doesn’t stop there as a number of prominent South-East Queensland jockeys have chosen to ride at Callaghan Park instead of its higher profile counterparts Doomben and the Gold Coast.
That too is a mighty compliment for the Rockhampton Jockey Club and all it has to offer.
On Sunday, 109 thoroughbred yearlings are catalogued for sale at the CYS at the Rockhampton Showground.
The sale is unique to provincial Queensland as all other thoroughbred yearling auctions are conducted by Magic Millions at the Gold Coast, who by the way are the selling agents on Sunday.
In fact, the Rockhampton based CYS, in operation since 1988 is one of less than a handful conducted outside any metropolitan area in Australia – what a feather in its cap!
Sunday’s sale will bring Rockhampton under the world wide spotlight as it will be broadcast live over the internet which is just another marvellous promotional tool the racing industry affords this city.
Given that Rockhampton TAB race meetings are also available some 40 times annually for viewing worldwide, it begs the question what other local industry can provide so much international focus on the city?
The answer is akin to a racing certain – none!
Therefore, Rockhamptonites should be justifiably proud of what the local racing industry provides the city in publicity alone which is also incomparable to any other sporting discipline in Central Queensland.
That’s not forgetting how each racing week the Rockhampton economy is bolstered in some way by visiting jockey; trainers; owners and on and on it goes.
Just imagine and do some equations for a few moments as to how much money the two days of racing and Sunday’s yearling sale has brought into the local economy.
It goes without saying many hundreds of thousands of dollars at the very least.
So, with so vast expense is being outplayed many of the racing industry stakeholders will be out for a little punt over the next few days to refurnish the purse strings.
Now that’s a task but there just so is a horse in the first race at Rockhampton today in TAB 8 -Nobody Better that could provide the goods.
This youngster could supply her “old man” Better Than Ready with his 15th individual winner for the season when he contests the Tony McMahon Racing Consultancy QTIS 2YO Maiden (1050m) at 12.57pm.
Surely, given that the race carries my insignia I have an obligation to tip the winner and Nobody Better has an obligation to win.
All I can tell you is this that Nobody Better is by far the best horse in the field whether she wins, loses or draws today so keep following her for a profit.
I believe after viewing her recent hit out in a Callaghan Park barrier trial when she was never fully extended, that Nobody Better can win today.
By the way, Nobody Better was a product from last year’s CYS when she fetched $24K and incidentally three more of the Better Than Ready breed are on offer at Sunday’s sale.
Just in case the unthinkable happens and Nobody Better lets us down (that can happen you know) have a little saver on Whipped Cream (TAB 12 – Race 2).
All is not lost if those two fillies don’t salute as Ruby Ray (TAB 10 -Race 7) should.
Good luck and enjoy a marvellous three days of racing and sales!
