Synonyms aims for CYS Classic after Mackay Win

It could well be a case of déjà vu at this years $118,000 Capricornia Yearling Sale’s 2Y0 Classic (1200m) in Rockhampton on Saturday, April 7 if Synonyms has its say.

Synonyms (b g 2 Teranaba -Lots Of Allure x Skilful Star) won Tuesday’s QTIS 2YO Maiden Handicap (1200m) at Mackay and claimed $17,600 in the process.

Having just his second start for trainer and co-owner Raymond West and Neil Baulch, it was a handy pick-up considering the Waylon J Stud product cost just $3000 at last year’s Capricornia Yearling Sale in Rockhampton.

Now Synonyms will be chasing the lucrative prize money purses in the CYS Classic something which his relation another of the Teranaba stock in the Andrew Suli trained Quick Assault succeeded in doing so in 2014.

Like Synonyms, Quick Assault was also a bargain CYS buy at around just $1000 before going on to win $127,000 in stakes.

Bargain buys in the annals of the Australian Turf are not uncommon with the greatest of all being the international champion Takeover Target who cost his Queanbeyan taxi driver turned trainer Jo Janiak just $1400.

Takeover Target retired the winner of $6,028,311 which sure beat driving taxis for his trainer.

In Tuesday’s Mackay race, Synonyms (Lachlan Dodds, $20.00) beaten Lyle Rowe’s first staer Chanamaro (Scott Sheargold, $11.00) by a nose with the Tom Button trained The Tax Accountant (Nigel Seymour, $3.50) a head away third.

Ironically as fate would decree, Synonyms was one of the cheapest yearlings from last year’s Rocky CYS while third placed The Tax Accountant was the dearest at $48,000.

It just goes to show that purchase price figures in the yearling sale ring are not always a reliable guide to a horse’s inherent ability.

From this year’s CYS perspective to be held at the Robert Schwarten Pavilion at the Rocky Showgrounds on April 8, the result of the Mackay race has considerable significance.

The proprietors of Waylon J Stud deriving its name from the renowned country and western start Waylon J Jennings are grand vendors and supporters of the Rocky Sale.

Waylon J – the stud that is not the singer – will offer 11 yearlings on Sunday week by such sires as Whittington; Delago Deluxe; Nisp; Red Element; Love Conquers All, Golden Archer and Denman.

Now the stud will be represented by Synonyms in the “big one” on Sale eve which will add impetus to its brand name.

Passionate local breeders Bill and Di Ouston would have also been elated by the excellent run of their gelding Chanamaro (Dutch Harry- Pokomo x Piccolo) to go so close to winning on debut yesterday TUESDAY

Through their breeding banner of Springton, the Oustons will present Lot 77 for auction on April 8 being a colt by the Fastnet Rock horse Hvasstan from Pokomo a winner of six and twice as a juvenile.

Pokomo has already produced four winners in Blackjack Davey; Jokerman; Emotionally Yours and You Angel You.

That list will soon be bolstered by another winner in Chanamaro.

Without any doubt whatsoever, this year’s CYS will produce more bargain buys to join Synonyms and Quick Assault and their ilk.
