Capricornia Yearling Sales Weekend Looking Magic

The pleasing results from this week’s two days Magic Millions March Yearling Sales on the Gold Coast indicate that organisers of the Capricornia Yearling Sales (CYS) in Rockhampton on Sunday week have much to look forward to.

A classy draft of 93 yearlings with 87 of those carrying lucrative QTIS bonus incentive prize money will be offered for sale at the Robert Schwarten Pavilion at the Rockhampton Showgrounds on Sunday, April 2.

Some 290 of the 368 yearlings offered at the Gold Coast sold averaging $28,978 for a gross amount of $8.4 million.

This delighted the Magic Millions crew who pointed out it was uncanny in that it was a similar result to last year and that just three years ago the sales gross was only $6M.

Even more satisfying from a CYS perspective was that two of its biggest supporters with outstanding drafts on April 2, presented and sold their drafts at the Gold Coast.

Neville Stewart’s Oakland’s Stud which has by far the biggest draft in Rockhampton had a 100% clearance rate at the Gold Coast.

“I offered 16 and sold the lot. I was very happy. People throughout Australia know that if you bid on an Oaklands yearling in almost every case you can buy it as we meet the market. That’s why our motto is “you bid you buy”.

All my yearlings in Rockhampton are as good as if not better than those I presented at the Gold Coast. We bring them to Rockhampton to race and race well they do. Oaklands could have as many as six of our 2016 CYS yearlings engaged in the $116K CYS 23YO Classic (1200m) there next Saturday. That tells you enough”, Stewart said.

Bob Woods’ Oakwood Farm, Haigslea sold 10 of his draft of 11 at the Gold Coast including yearlings by the highly sought after stallion Top Echelon.

Seven Top Echelon’s averaged just over $55K at the Gold Coast with one from Oakwood making $150K.

“The four Top Echelons I am bringing to sell in Rocky are absolute gems. We are also offering a cracker of a Jet Spur filly from the winning Commands mare Diamantina as Lot 45. There is black type throughout her family and I think she could be one of the buys of the Rocky sale”, Woods said.

Next Friday, March 31, the CYS 2YO Classic Calcutta dinner will be held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds from 6pm.Tickets for the highly popular event which includes a two course dinner must be purchased from the RJC offices at Callaghan Park by 4pm Friday, March 31.

Champion South African jockey Robbie Fraad who has ridden GR 1 winners throughout the world will be one of the guest speakers.

Two days of first class racing precedes the April 2 sales at Callaghan Park on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1.
